Mangawhai Trackies: quiet achievers.

You may have heard of Lincoln Downs, Council’s wastewater irrigation farm on Brown Road, but did you know that after years of lobbying by the Mangawhai Tracks Charitable Trust (MTCT) a 140 ha block of the farm running up the face of the Brynderwyns has been declared a Recreational Area? The block which includes reverting pasture, shrubland, and mature forest, is unsuitable for wastewater irrigation but has outstanding value for walking/tramping and biking, with a central ridge dividing the western side for walking from the eastern side for biking. But the Trackies have done more than just ensure its recreation status, they have in fact spent many hundreds of hours over the past 4 years designing and building around 12km of stage 1 and 2 of the walking/tramping tracks.
Although there is currently no public access, supervised Trust volunteers have had permission to get on with this work as part of their Friday morning working parties.
Council is committed to establishing public road access across the farm to a parking area at the base of the hill, a project we are hoping they give high priority so our community can access the already established walking tracks and so the bike park planning can proceed.
The Trackies are also heavily involved in upgrading the high use tracks in the Tanekaha Complex off King Road, with particular focus on upgrading the multiple small bridges.
We are also improving the surface of the highest use track to the first waterfall. Our Maintenance Team focuses on the numerous local tracks including those in the Community Park.
We love what we do and we love to see high use of the tracks by both the Mangawhai community and visitors from further afield. If you’d like to know more, check us out on www.mangawhaitracks.com
